Part IX: Through Tainted Glass
*Darkness is present on the screen, the absence of color is apparent in the form of blackness. Complete darkness, which is what the Requiem viewers saw for a moment. The void was filled as from the blackness faded in the image of a stained glass window. The stained glass depicted a distinct image; it was the famous painting of The Last Supper. The camera remained focused on the image before the silence was broken by the harrowing tone of Jimmy Gimmick.*
“Beautiful isn’t it?”
*The camera pans around to reveal the egotistical superstar starring with undivided attention into the stained glass image before him. The image of Gimmick however, was so drastically different from his previous appearance that it must have been startling to viewers.*
“Leonardo DaVinci’s finest piece, his masterpiece some may call it. As much as I appreciate its aesthetic value, the real reason I’m looking at this image is I find the story it tells so... compelling.”
*Gimmick turns to face the camera, his once thick head of hair gone save for the patch that remains running horizontally across its center.*
“You see Jesus got his disciples to sit around this table with him for his final meal where he declared that one of them would betray him. One of his disciples who had followed in his footsteps would stab him in the back for the sake of progressing the story at an appreciable pace we’ll call him Alexander.”
*Gimmick pauses as he runs his right palm across his remaining hair pushing it backwards so that it has a more vertical appearance.*
“Whilst addressing them the son of God pronounced to his closest friends ‘all of you are clean...all except one.’ He knew which one of them was unclean, he knew the man at the table who was unfit to sit in his presence, he knew of his plan, and yet he allowed it to continue.”
*Gimmick emotionally turns from the camera back to the stained glass the faintest outline of his reflection is present, he speaks straining to keep his voice from cracking with what appears to for the first time be genuine feeling.*
“He knew Alexander was the traitor, he knew it all along, maybe he thought that by not intervening he could allow his companion the opportunity to change, to abandon his selfish conquest in favor of his own moral standards. That maybe if he left it up to Alexander he wouldn’t betray his only friend.”
*Gimmick steps back from the stained glass mural, the camera follows him as he walks to what is now evidently a church. Gimmick strolls the aisles deep in thought, oblivious to the presence of the camera, ignoring his much sought after fame, as for these fleeting moments he thinks only to himself.
Jimmy Gimmick turns down the pew and carefully kneels down before gently folding his hands over one another and tilting his head to the wooden bench.*
“God out father, who art in heaven…”
*Gimmick begins mumbling quietly; most of his words are inaudible yet several it seems as though he places an added emphasis on, these bits and pieces can be heard.*
“We forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil,
amen.”
*Gimmick sits in solitude upon completing the prayer, and without even raising an eye he speaks once again to the camera, his voice choked, and his face remains out of sight.*
“The story has another chapter that can not be overlooked; the betrayer of Christ takes his own life, while Jesus rises to eternal salvation. This tale of ours hasn’t quite yet transitioned into your beloved historical annals just yet, we still have a ways to go before the much anticipated denouement.”
*Pulling himself into a sitting position on the bench Gimmick’s eyes dart across the sparsely filled church. His eyes focus now on the cross, the symbol of the catholic faith he looks at the crucified body of the betrayed Jesus and smiles. The kind of devilish grin that only the Machiavellian Jimmy Gimmick could muster. His watery eyes may as well have vanished then and there but they didn’t, and despite his grin his echoing voice still remained stuffy, with a hint of sadness.*
“Eternal salvation. Alexander’s victory is only temporary, the betrayal however, has left its mark for the aforementioned eternity, and I will make sure that you suffer for every waking moment of it.”
*Gimmick strides from his place in the pews, lacking his usual swagger and instead moves with the timid nature of an average citizen being watched by millions. Aside from his now bizarre appearance Gimmick could have been considered normal. Gimmick cautiously entered a confidential confession booth, as the camera approached he waved his hand signaling them away. A man sat on the other side of the thin veil to listen to the words of his unlikely confessor.*
“Forgive me father, I have sinned.”
