Brutality. What does it mean? Webster's defines it as "the trait of extreme cruelty." Surely there is more to it though. Is it not, at least in some form, a matter of perception. Ancient civilizations clearly had a different concept of what was cruel. The Aztecs sacrificed their own people in an effort to appease the gods, so that they might be favored, and receive blessings. The Spartans had a tradition that would no doubt today, be considered abhorring. When a Spartan baby was born, it was taken before the city's elders, and examined. If it was not healthy and sturdy it would be taken to the peak of Mt. Taygetos and flung into a ravine, left to die. History is filled with such customs as to make the very heart's of today's people sink. Our own culture is little more than a generation removed from public hanging's and firing squads. No doubt brutality has become a shell of it's former self, more and more actions impeding upon it's meaning.
There can be little doubt however that, at least in FCW, Randy Orton's actions over the last week were unacceptable. Orton unleashed savage attacks on Chris Jericho, Jericho's father, and an FCW official. Orton behaved like a crazed beast. To the outside world it may have appeared to have been brutality, but to Orton it was no more than a means to an end. Orton has laid his own path in front of him. In his mind it is his predetermined destiny. The one singular goal, a goal that precludes the need for any other. A clear sight of what he must do, what he must achieve. Everything else in life comes second, takes the proverbial backseat, to that most palpable of aspirations. This week, Orton has been no less busy, officially announcing the formation of 'Defiance,' the super group that includes Alex Shelley and THE Brian Kendrick. Now this week's Anarchy will see him compete, not once, but twice.
It's the usual scene in the arena, business as usual. The fans of course have their usual signs, 'U can't see me,' 'Time to play the game,' 'Marry me HBK', 'Orton sucks.' The originality was mind numbing. The mood changed immediately as "Voices" by Rev Theory hit the PA. The boos nearly drowning out the music. Orton walks out onto the ramp first, flanked by Kendrick and Shelley. The trio stand on the ramp as the pyro streams down behind them. The group then begins to make their way down the aisle. Shelley out in front filming with his paparazzi cam, as Orton walks slowly, Kendrick be-bopping beside him toward the ring. As the group enters the ring, the boos continue as the music dies down. Kendrick grabs a mic from ringside and speaks,
Kendrick: Defiance is in the building! (boos become louder) At this time everybody pipe down, and soak up some knowledge!
To no one's surprise the crowd doesn't "pipe down" instead joining in unison for a chant of "you suck." The group ignores them, and Kendrick hands the mic to Orton.
Orton: In case you didn't hear, you were instructed to shut the hell up! (heavy chorus of boos) This week, I have been placed in two matches at Friday Night Anarchy. For a mere mortal that might seem like a monumental task, but for me, it's another walk in the park. You see I have a few theories as to why I have been placed in two matches. The most obvious reason is because FCW management knows where their bread is buttered. They know where the Nielson's lie. Of course, the argument could also be made that this is Kennedy's way of showing me that attacking FCW officials will not be tolerated.
Orton: You see, I wasn't responsible for what happened to the referee last week. I am a competitor, and in the heat of battle I as dangerous as they come. Chris Jericho was my target, my prey, and the official just happened to get in my way. I'll pay the fine, no big deal. As far as the attack on Ted Irvine, it's simple. You see Jericho, last week you said something that I've come to realize is extremely accurate. I am not human. I am not a normal person. I don't just wrestle matches, I destroy anything in my path, anything that comes between me and my destiny. Jericho I am on a different wave length than you. You think it's personal? It still isn't personal. I haven't even begun to get personal. When you find yourself opposing me, nothing is off limits, and the whole time it's just business.
Orton: Jericho, you came here to the new FCW, with everything figured out. You just knew that you would reclaim the world title. You were certain that you would have no trouble assuming the position as top dog. But fate intervened Jericho. Fate found you pitted against me. Fate found you on the opposite end of the ring from a god among men. From that day forward Chris, everything you thought you knew has been challenged. It has been torn apart. Deep down you question not if you can beat me, but if you can still somehow become champion without having to go through me.
Orton: You talk about breaking the walls down? You're not breaking walls down Chris. You're hiding behind them. You are surrounded by walls of insecurity. You are surrounded by walls of fear, and false confidence. You don't know what to do next. You're like a trapped rat. You're backed into a corner with the most vicious of predators closing in on you. Somewhere in your mind Chris, that doubt is devouring you. It has rendered you useless. You no longer possess all your tools of war. Your pretend charisma is barely there anymore. Your attempts at seeming sure of yourself are shaky at best. You feel..........insignificant. You feel..........helpless. You have been in that ring with me. You know how good I am.
Orton: This match, this six man tag. For me it's about you Chris. Not because it's personal, but because taking you out will cement my rise to the top. By utterly and irrefutably beating you Chris, I will have taken that final step to the top. There will be no denying it. Second Coming is going to be your your ultimate demise, but this Friday, another preview. A second trailer of that blockbuster Alex Shelley is dying to film. We call it the "Age of Defiance." Jericho, you have seen nothing more than a glimpse of what I'm capable of, what I'm willing to do. So keep telling everyone how confident you are. Keep lying to them. You can't lie to yourself Chris.
Orton lowers the mic, and whispers something, inaudible to the camera, to Kendrick and Shelley. They began to look around and post up as if preparing for someone to interrupt.
Orton: As for my singles match. I guess management didn't feel that CM Punk received enough of a beating last time, and they're right. I didn't do enough damage to you last time Punk. I let you off easy. I beat you and went on my way. But seeing as how you're actually stupid enough to step in the ring with me again, I will make damn sure that you get the message this time. I will make sure Punk that the next time you're offered a match with Randy Orton, you pack your bags and quit. This time there will be no Jericho to distract me. This time Punk, I'm going to kick your head off your shoulders.
Orton: You have proven to be a huge disappointment to FCW, Punk. I was right when I called you, "the walking fluke." I on the other hand have been excellent. I have been flawless, and I won't let a worthless loser like you interfere with that. You don't have what it takes. You are the definition of a flash in the pan, and you won't sneak in and ruin my rise to greatness. There will be no room for error Punk. I'm not underestimating you, I'm simply promising that I will unleash a new breed of hell on you. This is my time, this is our time. The "Age of Defiance" is now, and the FCW universe will come to know it well.
"Voices" begins to play again, as Orton raises his arms triumphantly. Kendrick displays some flashy poses as well, all the while Shelley is capturing it on film. Defiance is prepared, let the reign begin.
